Cake International, Manchester 7-9 March 2014

Cake International – The Sugarcraft, Cake Decorating and Baking Show is the largest show of its kind in the world.

Britain’s very own national treasure, Mary Berry CBE and cake decorating expert Mich Turner MBE (Little Venice Cake Company and ITV’s Britain’s Best Bakery) are in Manchester’s Event City this weekend, baking live in the theatre and offering tips and advice in Q & A sessions.  They are also taking part in book signings, along with many others from the cake world, including Lindy Smith, Alyson Reynolds and Ann Pickard.

Cake International plays host to no less than 13 Competition classes and on display today were hundreds of, quite frankly, breathtaking cakes from Cupcakes to Birthday Cakes created by Juniors (12 & under and 13-16 yrs) to my favourite, a superb 5-tiered “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” masterpiece! I didn’t manage to get a decent photo of the whole cake, so I’m going to show the ‘top half’:

….and the ‘bottom half’:

Isn’t it it fabulous?!  I’m not sure – as yet – who made it, but I would love to find out more about them and their amazing skills!

Someone had also created a ‘Mary Berry’ cake:

If you are planning on visiting, bear in mind that there may be a 5-10 minute walk from the car park as Event City has 3 shows on this weekend.

There were plenty of exhibitors and lots of ‘hands-on’ demonstrations covering everything from sugarpaste stencilling and modelling to chocolate work and airbrushing.  If you go along, do let me know what you thought and, of course, eat lots, and lots of CAKE!!
